Although I love the original more, I think this is an incredible cover for several reasons. This one takes a darker approach, and Maynard's voice meshes with it exceptionally well. I just love this version without the chanting chorus that is in the background of the studio recording. What wonderful, intricate fingering that Pat is doing. I haven't heard his playing in a while and forgot how good he truly is. He always did have a way of making a guitar sing. Pat Metheny is to jazz what Carina Alfie is to progressive rock- he's articulate with his own kind of sweet soul thang going on. The vocal isn't bad. She has fine dynamics and it seems a hard part to sing.

I've been comparing this with the 95 vid. I'd still go with a male:female pair on the vocals. The falsetto doesn't quite do it for me in the opening melody. I think Lyle could have stepped it up on the 95 vid, reached back and pulled out something other than a typical contemporary jazz solo for this tune. Not bad, just not appropriately grand enough here. I actually prefer the piano solo here for some reason although this guy is no Lyle.

22/8. 11/4. Something like that. Its "3 threes and a two". That equals 11. Thats why in several of the vids I've noticed players using their hands to sort of count it out. WOnderful, incredibly uplifting music. Why not try it with one male and one female vocalist, though? The opening line I prefer being sung by a female, but I think a guy works best at other times. Poor Pat has to work so hard - couldn't he have used some technology to get all that out with less strumming?

I kind of agree with you, a lot of reforms are happening that seem to be slowly drawing away one's rights. I think(that's importent because I'm not sure its a fact) a law on the news that gives you the right to report anyone who "annoys without reason", so in a nut shell, anything that offends someone in the slightest manner can be reported on.
